EU and China reach a deal to cap Chinese hybrid imports

After two days of talks in Beijing, EU trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic announced a preliminary deal that he said could cut Chinese electric and plug-in hybrid imports to the bloc by up to half. Reports on 11 and 12 October put the cap at 350,000 hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars a year, rising up to 6% annually over four years and possibly starting on 1 December 2026. Hybrids had been outside the EU's 2024 duties on Chinese battery-electric cars, and the deal still needed approval from the 27 member states.
