Charging an electric car in Lebanon
How home charging works, how to charge when the grid is off, what is known about public chargers in Lebanon, which plugs Chinese-market cars use, and what vehicle-to-load means.

Home charging on AC
For most owners, charging starts at home. The IEA describes home charging as the preferred option where it is available, because it is affordable and convenient.
At home the car takes AC power, and its onboard charger converts it to DC for the battery. The slow route is the cordset supplied with the car, plugged into a dedicated circuit; a wall-mounted unit, or wallbox, is faster. The US Department of Energy advises using a certified electrician, who can also check that the house has enough capacity.
Wallbox ratings vary. BYD's Australian site sells its home AC charger as a 7 kW single-phase or an 11 kW three-phase unit, and lists the car's onboard charger as one limit on the real charging speed, along with battery size, charge level and the home's electrical capacity.

Single phase or three phase
China's AC connector, GB/T 20234.2, has seven pins, including three line phases, yet in practice it is limited to single-phase power. Mode 2 runs at 250 V and 10, 16 or 32 A, for up to about 8 kW, and mode 3 at 440 V and 16, 32 or 63 A, for up to 27.7 kW. The car's own onboard charger, usually under 10 kW, often sets the real limit.
A three-phase supply helps only if the car's onboard charger can use it. Check the car's AC charging rating before paying for a three-phase wallbox or a new supply.

Lebanon's grid in 2026
Public power covers only part of the day. EDL's national average was about four hours a day on 13 July 2026, after seven to nine hours at the end of February, and a typical household received roughly a sixth of the day from the grid, leaving about 20 hours to cover by other means.
EDL's output fell from 15.4 TWh in 2018 to 3.37 TWh in 2023, according to the Lebanese Centre for Energy Conservation. Only two of its seven thermal plants were running in October 2026, and a 2024 EDL report put technical and commercial losses at about 40% of the electricity entering its network.

Charging from a generator
Private generators covered half of Lebanon's electricity at the start of 2026, the LCEC says, and Beirut alone has about 9,300 of them. Households buy subscriptions rated in amps.
That electricity is expensive. The Energy Ministry's indicative generator rate in June 2026 was 41,973 Lebanese pounds per kWh, with fixed fees on top. Among the people The National interviewed, the median bill in August was $310, and a 25-amp subscription in one Beirut neighbourhood came to as much as $750 that month.
An electrician can tell you whether the subscription and the wiring can carry a charger, so ask before adding a car to a generator line. If they cannot, charging has to fit into grid or solar hours.

Solar panels and home storage
Solar has spread quickly. Lebanon had 1,505 MW of installed solar PV at the end of 2025, according to IRENA, and the LCEC puts solar at 19% of electricity production in 2026, up from 0.4% in 2018.
Much of the growth was private, as homes, shops, farms and factories added panels during the crisis. In July 2026 the Electricity Regulatory Authority asked for expressions of interest in up to 350 MW of grid-connected solar paired with 1 GWh of battery storage.
How much of a car's charging a home system can cover depends on the panels, the battery and the inverter. Ask the installer to include the car's daily use when sizing it.

Public chargers in Lebanon
We found no official count of public chargers in Lebanon from EDL, the LCEC or the Ministry of Energy and Water. In April 2021, AFP reported that EV Electra, a Lebanese start-up, planned about 100 charging stations across the country, fed by generators and later perhaps by solar and wind.
We found no later report confirming how many of those were built. Until a reliable count exists, plan to charge at home and treat any public charger as an extra.

Plugs: GB/T, Type 2 and CCS
Cars built for China use the GB/T connectors: an AC inlet under GB/T 20234.2 and a DC inlet under GB/T 20234.3. The DC connector has nine pins, and after its 2023 revision it is rated up to 1,500 V and 800 A, or up to 1,200 kW.
The GB/T AC plug resembles the European Type 2, but the two are not interchangeable. The genders of the car and cable ends are reversed, and the signalling differs.
The IEA names incompatible plug types as a technical barrier to public charging. ChaoJi, a newer connector developed in 2020 by the China Electricity Council and CHAdeMO and rated at 900 kW, is meant to work with GB/T DC, CHAdeMO and CCS through adapters. Check which inlets your exact car has before you count on any charger or adapter.

Vehicle-to-load (V2L)
Vehicle-to-load means the car's battery powers devices directly, without feeding the grid. Vehicle-to-home goes further and runs a house, which can mean emergency power for several days during an outage.
Output differs between cars: the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was among the first to offer 3,600 W of V2L, and many recent electric cars have AC sockets of up to 3,600 W. The IEA notes that China has published a policy to standardise vehicle-to-grid technology. Whether a given Chinese model has V2L, and at what power, has to be checked on that car.

Questions et réponses
Can I charge an electric car on a generator subscription?
It depends on the amps you pay for and on the wiring. Have an electrician confirm the line can take the charger, and remember that generator power is billed at a high rate per kWh.

Will a Chinese-market car plug into European-style chargers?
Not directly. Its GB/T inlets differ from Type 2 and CCS in shape details and signalling, so it needs a matching charger or a suitable adapter.

How many public chargers does Lebanon have?
We could not find an official figure. The last widely reported plan, from 2021, was for about 100 generator-fed stations, and we found no confirmation of how many were built.

Do I need three-phase power for a wallbox?
Usually not for a car built for China. The GB/T AC connector is limited to single phase in practice, so what counts is the AC rating of the car's onboard charger.

Can the car power my house during a power cut?
Only with vehicle-to-home, which needs support from both the car and the home's wiring. V2L, where fitted, runs individual appliances from the car instead.
