EU said to be preparing extra duties on plug-in hybrids made in China
Handelsblatt reported that the European Commission plans countervailing duties on Chinese plug-in hybrids within weeks, to close a gap that lets them enter at the standard 10% import duty. Battery-electric cars from China have carried extra duties since 31 October 2024, for example 17% on BYD, 18.8% on Geely and 35.3% on SAIC. The Commission had denied any hybrid tariff plan in January, and the reports could not confirm a final decision. In May, BYD led Germany's plug-in hybrid registrations for the first time, with 4,290 cars.
