Canada opens its second quota period for China-made electric vehicles

The second quota period for EVs made in China opened in Canada on 1 September and runs to 28 February 2027. Global Affairs Canada set a base of 24,500 vehicles plus whatever went unused in the first period, and law firm Bennett Jones put the total at 33,397 after 8,897 places were left over from March to August. Cars inside the quota pay the 6.1% most-favoured-nation tariff instead of the 100% surtax that applied before March 2026. Each shipment needs its own import permit, handed out first come, first served.
