China sets its first mandatory safety standard for L3 and L4 automated driving
MIIT announced GB 44721-2026, a national standard with safety requirements for L3 and L4 automated driving systems, after the market and standards regulators approved it on 30 July. Such systems must be at least as safe as a capable, attentive human driver, and L3 cars must monitor whether the driver is ready to take over. If the driver ignores a takeover request, the car has to perform a minimum-risk manoeuvre. The rules apply from 1 July 2027 and leave out automated parking.
